Andrew and Paul published a new paper on the critical role of alpha II spectrin variants in epileptic encephalopathy in collaboration with Drs. Yu Wang, Geoff Murphy, and Jack Parent. This work used CRISPR-mediated deletion of Sptan1 along with induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neurons from early infantile epileptic encephalopathy type 5 patients to demonstrate important roles for alpha II spectrin in normal dendritic and axonal development as well as normal inhibitory innervation.
